Why Is Christmas Day On December 25?

A very early Christian tradition says that when Mary was told she would have an exceptional baby, Jesus (known as the Annunciation) was on March 25 – and is still celebrated today on March 25. Nine months after March 25 is December 25!

March 25 is also the date on which some early Christians claim that the world was created and the day Jesus died as an adult. They claim that Jesus was conceived and born and died on the same day of the year.

According to the Jewish calendar, on the 14th day of the month of Nisan, Jesus died – the Jewish Passover day. The Jewish calendar is lunar (based on the moon, not a fixed date), so it moves around the dates in the Gregorian calendar. Saint Ephrem of Syria (306 – 373) taught that Jesus was conceived on Nisan 10! So March 25 became a ‘fixed’ date on the Gregorian calendar to mark these ‘movable’ days on the Jewish calendar.
